  • ELENA

“Dear Anita, I am writing to thank you, plus your team, for all your help whilst I have been on the Lifestyle Programme. Your help and guidance have been very helpful, I lost 1½ stones and 4 inches off my waist. My London cardiologist consultant is extremely pleased with the results! When I first came to you, I had no hope, having been told that my extremely high blood pressure would potentially kill me, so I was down in the dumps. But you Anita, have proved them wrong. Your dedication has been exemplary! You deserve an award! You have resolved my faith in the medical profession. I feel now after completing the course, I am on the road of the recovery and hope we can keep in touch! Thanks again.”

  • LINDA

“Dear Anita, I just wanted to say a big thank you to you and your team. I did not realise how much I had learned from your advice and group sessions until now. It is hard to stay focused alone. I know I had a few problems but they were my fault no one elses. Your course was really interesting and informative and I miss seeing you all. I wish you every success in the future and hope you are able to carry on helping people like myself to eat and live healthier.”

  • JAN (AGED 58)

“After years of trial and error of trying to lose weight and change my bad eating habits, I started the programme with much hope and trepidation. It was crunch time, I felt ill, swollen and bloated, full of aches and pains. I knew I couldn’t go on like this any longer. However, I soon adjusted to the programme and found I was losing weight gradually and becoming aware of why I was putting on weight, what I had to do to change, and my feelings towards food and exercise.

The programme literally saved my life. It has been life changing and given me more confidence, I feel fitter and healthier and it is a great feeling to fit into clothes several sizes smaller and look feel I look good. Thank you Anita!

I found the actual programme simple and straightforward. No weighing and excessive counting of different foods. I did have to make time for meals and found myself looking at food labels and making choices. I learnt that it was OK to come off the programme as long as I picked myself up and started again. I was not made to feel guilty or undermined. I gained confidence as the weight dropped. It helped enormously listening to other people’s stories and their personal ups and downs in helping me to face mine in a calm and friendly atmosphere.”

  • DAWN (TYPE 1 DIABETES PATIENT ON INSULIN PUMP THERAPY)

“Thanks for the news (HbA1c result) Anita, it’s fantastic! Without your upbeat approach to this, I don’t think I would have been able to reach such a result. You are a great teacher!”

  • ANNA (TYPE 1 DIABETES)

“I need to make a comment about the care, support, help, advice and encouragement given to me by Anita. Anita is wonderful and so very caring and committed to helping me make the very most of my diabetes insulin pump. Please pass on my thanks for all she has done.”

  • ALAN

“Having been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes after blood tests with my local GP, I was invited to attend the weight loss program organised by Anita Bowes Dietitian at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital. As part of the program the group had regular meetings over a period of 18 months and we were given dietary information and attended weekly exercise classes at the local leisure centre. As a result of the program I have now (3.5 years later) been tested and my blood sugar levels are normal and I have lost 19kg in weight. The help and care from all involved at the hospital was first class.”

  • CHRISTOPHER (RETIRED. AGE 67)

“Hi Anita, I can’t thank you and your team enough, just by making sensible changes to my diet I have lost 2 stones in six months, when I started the program my blood sugar was already too high for the research program but being able to follow the LIFE STYLE lessons my weight is falling naturally, my blood pressure is now 150/82 a lot less than it was, and I feel fitter. My biggest change was cutting down on alcohol (red wine) it made a big difference. I shall carry on with all that I have learnt to have a healthy and happy retirement. Thanks again.”

  • REBECCA

“Dear Anita, I wanted to write and let you know how much I enjoyed attending Lifestyle programme Group sessions. The information given was invaluable and really made think about what I was eating and whether the food item was a nutritional benefit to my body.

It was also nice to learn that a balanced diet and lifestyle is not about depriving yourself of any treats. The “Going out for Christmas” and “Helpful tips for this Christmas” fact sheets made me realise that you can still have a life whilst being aware of over indulgence of the “bad” food types. So with little forward thinking you can still enjoy the party.

Once again thanks to you and your team for your help and assistance over the past eight months.”

  • VANESSA A

“The Lifestyle Programme was a real life saver for me. After years of trying every diet going, losing weight only to put it back on, I needed to find a way of eating sensibly. The support given by the team, along with the dietary advice and reasoning behind weight management, was brilliant. Working in small groups of people in the same situation we explored the reasons why we abuse our bodies with the wrong food and empty calories. At the end of the six month programme I was sorry to have to leave, having made lasting friendships and loosing over a stone. I also enjoyed the exercise classes run at the Littledown Centre by the excellent Irena. I would recommend this group and suggest anyone with weight issues to give it a go, there is nothing to lose apart from bad habits and unwanted weight.“

  • LOUISE BURT (ARTIST/HOUSEWIFE. AGED 54)

“I started the Lifestyle Programme weighing 19 stone and although nearly 6ft tall, I was clinically obese and very concerned about the health issues related to my unhealthy lifestyle. I have been a serial dieter, trying every single one on the market but each time I successfully lost weight, I put even more back on. One year I lost nearly 5 stone but over six years had put on more than 7 stone. It affected everything I did and was beginning to scare me for the future. Literally every mouthful was killing me.

Answering Anita’s request for research subjects, I felt that I was being thrown a lifeline. It came at a fortuitous time and I decided to give it my all. I had to succeed this time or risk the chance of developing diabetes, which my brother has, having a stroke which my aunt died of, or a heart attack which took my Dad at the age of 59. Obesity related cancer was also a possibility. I was heading in the wrong direction and needed help soon. Anita has been that help – a lifeline.

In 6 months I have lost 4st and working to be down 6st by Christmas. That would put my BMI at a healthy figure. My weekly average weight loss, if sustained, indicate that I can do it. And do it I shall!

How? I hear you say. I have followed everything that Anita has taught me. I take notes in the information sessions and review them frequently. I buy and eat all that has been suggested. I am lucky that I like all food (of course I do to have got into this mess in the first place) but seriously, loving vegetables, salad and fruit is a bonus. I love cooking and have been adventurous. It has been a fun challenge to try new things such as Soya milk or brown rice. I love it all! I also thought I knew a lot about food but I have been amazed, shocked, intrigued and educated about food and how the body deals with it – it has been fascinating.

I have not denied myself anything, from fish and chips to chocolate but these are minor treats as my appetite has reduced and I am happier to eat a nutritious, healthy meal. I get a high from doing the right thing. An occasional lapse is human and I get back on it and see the results of a healthy lifestyle. Dropping 4 dress sizes is a definite boost!

In addition to dietary changes, I have embraced the opportunity to exercise more. I started off by taking advantage of the hour long circuits class offered by the project and straight away noticed the benefits. It is a fun class, run by a lovely interested instructor, who supports you throughout. I have made some lovely friends here along the way and we all help one another. I also started walking as much as possible; even dropping my daughter off to her Saturday job, walking home and then walking back to pick her up in the evening. I increased my activity week on week. Now, I swim 3 times a week, take a Zumba and Aqua-fit class, go Nordic walking, as well as the circuits class and my Saturday walk. I have reached that point where I am addicted to fitness – long may it continue!

In addition to these lifestyle changes, I have made a valuable friend to take the journey with. We sat next to each other on the first day and have remained friends ever since. We talk through the good and bad times, exchange recipes, offer advice and encourage, praise or console as necessary. I believe that our cup of tea before the circuits class has been of benefit to overall success. We have invited others along the way and have a select tea party every week. It is good to know that others share the same vices, face similar hurdles and yet can come through in the end.

I know that I have lost my weight quickly and I keep everything crossed that I will keep the weight off but I really believe this time that I have made a lifestyle change that is sustainable. I eat healthily and feel fantastic, I exercise and enjoy it but more importantly, I can manage this within my family, work and life situation. I have been given the tools to do the right thing and I truly believe that I have been given extra years on my life. I hope and pray that I have the fortitude to keep focussed and to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

So my advice to anyone equally lucky to be involved with Anita’s research is to

    • Listen and learn – follow the knowledgeable information and attend regularly.

    • Go for it – just do it!

    • Get up a move – burn the calories.

    • Do not waste the opportunity!

I thank Anita and her team for what they have done for me and continue to do.

    Thanks for everything Guys.”
